Haagen Dazs Spirits Stout Chocolate Pretzel Crunch
Haagen Dazs Spirits Stout Chocolate Pretzel Crunch is labeled as " Rich chocolate ice cream is infused with Stout for notes of toasted malt, then mixed with crunchy chocolate covered pretzels and decadent fudge swirls." Häagen-Dazs has finally brought the Spirits Collection to the United States after this being exclusive only to Canada. Each of the Spirit products do contain forms of alcohol but in a very small amount. These products all contain less than 0.5% alcohol, so you won't get drunk on them alone. They do make solid additions to cocktails and ice cream floats, though, so do with that information what you will. None the less let us see what Canada has been hiding from us for over 365+ days.
Typically I am not one who likes beer or to drink at all. When I first tasted this I barely picked up any of the stout as the rich chocolate was the dominating taste. The chocolate ice cream is smooth and delicious with a flavor that leans more towards milk than dark, especially when eaten in tandem with the chocolate covered pretzels. The creaminess, density, and richness of the milk chocolate will smother your taste buds as the stout lingers in the aftertaste.
The chocolate covered pretzels are an unrefined mix-in to Haagen Dazs. At first, I had my doubts, but after cracking a few of these they were awesome. The crunch is present, the salt is just right, and the milk chocolate outer coating goes hand in hand with the base. Chocolate covered pretzels are one of my favorite mix-ins for ice cream and Haagen Dazs nailed it. On the other hand, the fudge swirls were nowhere to be seen. I don't have much to comment on in regards to the swirl besides seeing little slivers on the surface, but after that, it was just pretzel chunks throughout the rest of my experience.
Haagen Dazs is known to produce fantastic ice cream bases, and for a grocery brand, they are hard to beat. The addition of the chocolate covered pretzels complimented the dominating base very well. The booze is very light (.5% alcohol) so that it does not overpower the experience, but give you a small glimpse of what is advertised. The only downfall was the missing swirl, which is unfortunate, but that happens in the ice cream game when batches are made in large volume. A good flavor, but could have been much better with a consistent swirl.
