Haagen Dazs Espresso Chocolate Cookie Crumble
Haagen Dazs Espresso Chocolate Cookie Crumble is labeled as "Coffee ice cream swirled with cookie crumbles and sprinkled with chocolate espresso flakes". You may recall the non-dairy version Mocha Chocolate Cookie which is very similar to this flavor. The major difference is the non-dairy to dairy base and mocha to coffee ice cream.
The coffee ice cream is very true to its name. From the first bite, you can taste the richness of coffee, but it is not to the point where it is overpowering. The base is equivalent to a medium roast at a local coffee shop. The texture of HD's base is very smooth and dense as they are a fantastic grocery store ice cream that gets overlooked. Espresso Chocolate Cookie Crumble is a step above the regular coffee ice cream on the Haagen Dazs line with just a hint of cream and sugar to give it a slightly stronger taste.
The chocolate cookie crumbles is identical to the non-dairy variety on the HD line. There are a similar thickness and grainy texture, and the swirls were consistent throughout the pint. The chocolate espresso flakes remind me of the Ben & Jerry's fudge flakes with a slightly bitter aftertaste. I initially couldn't decide whether or not I liked the bitterness, but it grew on me as I ate more and more ice cream. I do, however, think this bitterness makes Espresso Cookie Crumble a for-coffee-lovers-only flavor, and the espresso flakes could use a lot more flavor to make them relevant in this ice cream.
Coffee lovers will find this worth a scoop. The coffee base is above average and there is plenty of swirl and mix-ins to keep the consumer attracted throughout the experience. I personally found the ratio of coffee to chocolate to mesh well as neither overpowered each other. If you are not a huge fan of coffee I would shy from this one and step towards the non-dairy Mocha Chocolate cookie.
