Ample Hills Triple Chocolate Surprise
To celebrate the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse, Ample Hills collaborated with Disney to make three pints of birthday cake ice cream flavors chock-full of Disney magic. Around each pint, Ample Hills used a comic strip set during one of Mickey's birthdays. The company collaborated closely with Disney to create these three original Mickey Mouse stories and ice cream flavors. Triple Chocolate Surprise is labeled as Chocolate malted ice cream with chocolate fudge cake, ribbons of dark chocolate buttercream frosting and Mickey-shaped white chocolate pieces filled with fudge.
The chocolate malt base is carried over from Ample Hill's exclusive Harry & Eigel’s Marbled & Malted flavor from Dekalb Market. Malt is sugar that adds a toasty flavor, and it has the added benefit of preventing iciness in ice cream. The smooth and creamy texture of the base milk chocolate flavoring is the dominant flavor with the malt seeping through in the aftertaste. When pairing the chocolate malt it reminds me of eating robin egg's from Easter. I really enjoy this base, but it does not dethrone the GOAT in It Came From Gowanus.
The first item that stuck my spoon was the Mickey shaped white chocolate pieces filled with fudge. The outside had a luscious white chocolate flavor that included a rich fudge center. The pieces of candy were a touch hard as you would expect being frozen into a dessert. The chocolate fudge cake was scattered throughout the pint, but I only picked up a few pieces throughout the experience. The soft, dense, and moist cake was similar to their gooey butter cake enhanced with a milk chocolate flavor. The dark chocolate ribbon, on the other hand, was very hard to pick up. You had to look extremely close to notice the swirl as the base ice cream overpowered the subtle inclusion.
All in all the first flavor of the Mickey pack was good with room for improvement. Ample Hills used the Dekalb Market exclusive ice cream and tossed in new inclusions for mix-ins. I personally would have liked to see a larger balance of swirl and fudge cake to give this a boost in rankings.
