Clementine's Apollo
Clementine's Apollo is labeled as "A cosmic, chocolately ice cream with mini marshmallow moons and galaxies of swirling creamy caramel." Clementine's Creamery partnered with the St. Louis Science Center to help launch this flavor. An article from the St. Louis magazine stated this ice cream used three forms of chocolate. Given Clementine's track record with churning high quality ice cream they would go above and beyond for a limited edition flavor.
When I first popped the lid to this flavor it took me by surprise how dark and dense the ice cream looked. The consistency is ideal to custard due to how creamy and rich the texture is. The chocolate is unique, and you can taste a trio of flavors that hit your taste buds. From first bite the initial taste congeals a dark chocolate and bittersweet milk chocolate. As the savor lingers on your taste buds it prolongs a salty rich chocolate taste.
Apollo combines mini marshmallows and a caramel swirl for the mix-ins. The mini marshmallows were soft in texture and loaded on the surface of the pint. The sweetness they give helps compliment the overpowering rich chocolate base. The caramel swirl was very hard to pick up in Apollo. Every so often I ran into a bite that has a sweeter, smoother punch to it, and that is where the caramel comes into play. Clementine's missed the mark with enough swirl to deliver a deep sweet, salty, and caramelized complimenting experience.
Clementine's really made you taste the rainbow on this base with the diversity of chocolate that was used. Given how potent the base was it rivals It Came From Gowanus at Ample Hills as one of my all-time favorite chocolate bases. The mini-marshmallows are a good mix-in, but I needed more swirl to give this a better grade.
Grade: B
