Clementine's Banana Boozy Rum
Clementine's Banana Boozy Rum is labeled as "Roasted banana with Vietnamese cinnamon, spiced rum and salted butterscotch caramel swirl." Clementine's naughty ice cream is infused with liquor and/or rum. Being I am not a drinker, I have had the Maple Bourbon in the past and enjoyed it due to the severity of the booze. Given Clementine's track record with top tier ice cream the small inclusion of alcohol gives it a unique twist.
The base of this flavor is roasted banana and Vietnamese cinnamon spiced rum. Clementine's density and thickness provided in their ice cream base is unmatched due to their high buttermilk fat (16%) and low over-run (under 30%). The banana base gives you a subtle banana flavor with a surmounting cinnamon pairing. The Vietnamese cinnamon provides a bold flavor because it contains up to 6 percent essential oil vs the .5-2.5% in other varieties. The amount of rum is just enough to tickle your taste buds, but not be overbearing to non-drinkers.
The salted butterscotch caramel swirl was laced from top to bottom. The richness of the caramel was surreal. Butterscotch and caramel contain overlapping ingredients primarily butter and sugar. The butterscotch brown sugar element shines due to the power of the vietnamese cinnamon. When in conjunction the swirl enhances the mild base to replicate a bananas foster dessert.
Given the quality of the ingredients in this flavor the density of the cinnamon may surprise consumers. The flavor was good, but I wanted a stronger banana flavor. I had no issues with the amount of rum as a non-drinker, but the swirl and vietnamese cinnamon are the star of the show. This was the heaviest pint in my shipment clocking in over 500g. When the pint density is that high it shows there was no skimping on mix-ins.
Grade: C+
