Coolhaus Balsamic Fig & Mascarpone
Coolhaus Balsamic Fig & Mascarpone is labeled as "Italian Mascarpone ice cream with balsamic glazed figs." I have only had one other fig based ice cream and that is "The Cin" from ample hills which uses a totally different base but similar mix-ins. The stuffed fig newtons were absolutely divine. While I don't see Coolhaus going that route I am eager to see how this compares. This was praised as one of their best flavors, and luckily my wegmans had it in stock.
Right away when you pop the lid the base gives you a strong cheesy scent. That is a good thing because mascarpone is Italian cream cheese coagulated by the addition of certain acidic substances such as lemon juice, vinegar, citric acid or acetic acid. Digging into my first bite this base is very good. While the density is not as rich as say Gelato Fiasco's Mascarpone Pistachio this is still very good for 190 calories a serving. The gumminess and creaminess of the base give you a resemblance of a cannoli filled pastry. Since those are one of my favorite desserts this one started off on a strong note.
Removing the lid, there's a distinctly cheesy aroma coming from the ice cream. It actually reminds me a lot of the smell of a cannoli. The taste isn't too far off from a cannoli filling either. While it reminds me more of a lightly sweetened cream cheese than a cannoli filling, it's hands down the greatest cheesy base I have encountered. If I thought the goat cheese base from Jeni's was amazing, this is sheer perfection. Heck, Jeni's can't even hold a candle to the flavor coming from the base alone in this pint. Coolhaus texture and quality is no joke either. This is definitely super-premium stuff rivaling the best in the business.
I did not strike a fig until half way down the experience, but once I did they were abundant in size. They provide a chewy compliment to a quality base that has a acidic aftertaste from the addition of balsamic. While this is a unique twist on a fig it really compliments everything well. You may think the tanginess from the cheesy base and the acidity from the figs would be a turnoff, but it actually works out. What you do not see on the label is a small balsamic swirl that is thin and slithers its way down your experience of this ice cream.
Overall when I picked up this pint I had mixed feelings, but this is easily the best of the 4 flavors I have scooped. If you do enjoy mascarpone have no fear you will like this one. For those who are not a big fan of the cream cheese or tanginess associated with the ice cream base, this may be down your list of priorities. I personally would like to see fig's used in the ice cream market more often. I think it is an under appreciated mix-in that does not get enough recognition.
