Coolhaus' Campfire S'mores
Coolhaus' Campfire S'mores is labeled as "Salted tahitian vanilla bean ice cream with a graham cracker cookie butter-marshmallow swirl and dark chocolate squares." It is not everyday you see a S'mores ice cream with a vanilla bean ice cream base. Most likely you run into graham cracker, marshmallow, or a chocolate base which are the primary components. After my first two experiences with coolhaus which missed mix-ins and swirls I am eager to see if the newer flavors give me better luck.
The vanilla bean base is tasty, but there is room for improvement. The first thing I noticed was the amount of salt was not strong enough to be deemed salty vanilla bean. While it is present it needs to be amplified. The next thing I noted was the base has a gummy and fluffy consistency to it. The vanilla is rich but for a 200 calorie ice cream this won't light up your taste buds like a Graeter's, Salt & Straw, Ample Hills, or a Clementine's Ice Cream. The bean aftertaste is nice and reminds me of vanilla bean coffee creamer with a stronger tone of flavor.
Onto the mix-ins are the cookie butter marshmallow swirl and dark chocolate squares. Upon looking at the surface there is a huge chocolate square, but no sign of the swirl (yet). After digging into the first few bites that was the only mix-in I came across until I got about half way through the experience. This is when I picked up more mix-ins but mostly swirl. Throughout the pint I had 5 total chocolate squares which provide the necessary chocolate compliment to a s'more. This is not as tasty as a Hershey chocolate bar, but its serves its purpose. The graham cracker cookie butter marshmallow swirl is a dominant graham with small vibes of cookie butter. This is not speculoos by any means but tries to replicate it to the best Coolhaus' can in a lower calorie ice cream option. I did not get too much marshmallow at all, but this may have binded in with the vanilla bean base.
Overall this was an unorthodox spin-off on a S'mores flavor. I like the vanilla base, but it will need a lot of graham and chocolate to make up for the lack of marshmallow provided in a traditional campfire snack. I personally thought it was well done and a much better experience then molten chocolate cake and the mint flavor on their line. This needs to pack more chocolate pieces and have a larger swirl to stand up against the other S'mores on the ice cream market.
My S'mores Rankings based off Bases:
Marshmallow Base:
1) Clementines
2) Wegmans
3) Turkey Hill
Graham Cracker Base:
1) 7-11
2) Graeter's
3) Giffords
4) Handel's Graham Central Station
5) Gelato Fiasco
Chocolate:
1) S&S Oregeon Honey Rocky Road
2) Ben & Jerry's (and their chocolate is not very good)
Vanilla:
1) Coolhaus
Grade: B-
Found: Wegmans
