Also, my last pint of Half Baked was a bad one, it had dry and tasteless brownies and cookie dough pieces. The same thing happened to me a few months ago! I thought my memory had failed me since it had been probably four or five years since I'd had Half Baked. Maybe B&J changed the recipe?

Lucky you! Seattle is a great place to score delicious locally made foods of all kinds. I lived in Portland for four years and was a big fan of Umpqua, especially considering the price. Tillamook is another Pacific NW favorite, but I think it has kind of a weird marshmallowy texture. You might like how soft and creamy it is, though, so it's definitely worth a taste. My favorite Tillamook flavor was always marionberry pie.

The idea for this thread came to me for a reason: Talenti double dark chocolate. Usually gelato has a richer chocolate flavor than ice cream, but not this one.
Had I read the reviews of the other chocolate chip flavors (coffee, black raspberry, stracciatella) first, I would have known not to set my expectations so high. Too little, too late.

Did you excitedly bring home a new flavor of ice cream, unable to wait a single second to dig your spoon into the pint, only to have your hopes immediately crushed by a failure to live up to expectations?
Share your tales of ice cream woe here.
If you're rendered speechless by a flavorless base and disgusting mix-ins, you can list the brand and flavor alone and leave the sad details unsaid. But also feel free to unleash your full-length saga of frozen heartbreak.

I once misremembered which banana split tasted so insanely good and bought the Ben & Jerry's. It was totally disappointing. Try the HD next time you see it in stores. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Yes! And I am pretty much perpetually broke. Here's a wallet-friendly tip for anyone living in the NYC area: Bed, Bath & Beyond – at least the one in Chelsea – carries a few flavors of Jeni's. AND you can use store coupons to buy it. You're welcome! (Please save some for me.) Interesting...I have a Bed, Bath & Beyond in my town. I wonder if they'd have any more flavors than the only other store that carries Jeni's in my area. Most Bed, Bath & Beyond stores don't have a grocery section, but it seems like they might be slowly rolling the concept out to the bigger, fancier stores. The one in Chelsea doesn't have more than three or four flavors at a time, and lately I've stopped peeking in there to check what's in stock so I avoid temptation. But thank god I was able to get goat cheese and cherries there a few times – for $8!

Simply, if it is Talenti and it has anything remotely caramel in it (a swirl or a base) then it is money. This. Talenti and 2nd Street own the caramel game. I had (stupidly) avoided Talenti before I found ICI. Thanks to your review, I started with the sea salt caramel, not a flavor I'd pick on my own. It was stunning. Since then I've been on a mission to try all of Talenti's flavors, and they clearly own the caramel game. When I first saw the banana chocolate swirl, I thought the caramel seemed extraneous. But then I tasted it and realized they really should just put caramel in everything.

Thanks for reminding me about herb ice creams, robboe. I must not consider those that weird anymore! I had a delicious sorrel ice cream when I reviewed desserts in Phoenix. The article is online with a pretty picture, but I unfortunately didn't write much about the sorrel ice cream. Words couldn't really do it justice. I've never heard of mastic before! What does it taste like?

Since I have three roommates, freezer space is tight. That's probably good anyway; I try to limit myself to one or two pints per week. Right now I have Steve's Southern Banana Pudding. I haven't always found Steve's to live up to expectations, but this flavor far surpassed mine. I'll get a reader review to you soon.

Here in Brooklyn, a shop named OddFellows Ice Cream just opened a few weeks ago. Its specialties include cornbread (the one that got me in the door), maple-bacon pecan, and caramel chorizo. YES, CHORIZO! Neither of the meat flavors had actual meat pieces in them, but were made with rendered fat from the bacon and sausage. This made the maple-bacon pecan really rich, and it was divine scooped together with the cornbread in a freshly made waffle cone. But I wish there had been cornbread chunks in there. Based on a small sample of the chorizo, I'd say the spicy sausage was definitely second fiddle to the strong caramel – probably a good thing.
The best bacon ice cream I've had, though, was at Quinn's in Seattle. It was served with apple caviar. While I don't like caviar, it was delicious on top of the slightly smoky yet surprisingly light ice cream. It was the perfect end to a perfect meal.
I also recently tried lucuma ice cream, a Peruvian favorite. It was pretty good, not an odd flavor at all. The only slightly unusual thing was a kind of dry taste on the tongue, but overall it was a sweet and mildly tangy fruit – maybe somewhere between kiwi and pomegranate? It paired nicely with lemon wafer cookies.

Ha, I hear ya! I had the Slow Churned version, I don't know what they did to it but the coconut was whacked or something. Usually I love coconut but this was way too much. Don't be turned off all German Chocolate flavors by Edy's, that's the only one that's ever struck me that way. Talenti's was all right, only thing they should have done was include actual cake! I was also disappointed that there weren't any cake pieces in the Talenti! German chocolate cake isn't usually my thing, but I tried it anyway because I was enticed by the idea of cake chunks or at least crumbs. It was ok, but definitely not a flavor I'd consider buying again.

Banana split. It has the perfect balance of all the right elements, and Haagen Dazs somehow nailed the whipped cream flavor. It's no contest between their version and Ben & Jerry's.
