New Orleans Ice Cream Company Mardi Gras Pie
New Orleans Ice Cream Co. Mardi Gras Pie is labeled as " Gooey marshmallow ice cream with marshmallow swirl, chocolate flakes & soft graham cracker. You'll be hollerin' Throw me one, mister!" After reading this label I was thinking about tossing myself into the spring sensation and getting ready for a S'mores based pint. This flavor is meant to replicate a moon pie dessert. Since it has been so long is this pint as good as I remember it!?
New Orleans marshmallow base was loaded with flecks of chocolate, and hints of graham cracker. Being a marshmallow base it is hard to notice any marshmallow swirl at first glance. That soon changed after my first bite of the ice cream which left a very lingering luscious marshmallow flavor. The flavor takes you back to the summer days torching a campfire and having that creamy and delicious marshmallow from a roasted marshmallow. The ice cream base is on the lighter side to some of the top tier premium ice cream companies on the market. With that said it is still thick, creamy, and has a fantastic amount of flavoring. You can clearly tell the buttermilk fat is not lacking.
As you make your way down the pint the graham cracker pieces are scattered all over the place. The Chocolate Flakes are hit or miss in the pint. I had a total of around 10 that were little shards that reminded me Ben & Jerry's fudge flakes. The Marshmallow Swirl is hard to pick up, but there are small slivers laced throughout the pint that are limited in appearance. The combination of the marshmallow base, bits of graham crackers, and little shards of chocolate compliment each other perfectly. The only downside is it seems that it needs more to make this experience pop.
Overall this is a good pint, but has room for improvement. The base can be sweeter, and the mix-in consistency was lacking. New Orleans found a way to replicate a moon pie into a classic ice cream flavor.
