Graeter's Malted Pretzel Ball
Graeter's Malted Pretzel Ball is labeled as "Milk chocolate pretzel balls in malted ice cream." Graeter's releases bonus flavors every two weeks over the course of the summer. This allows fans of the company to try new limited edition flavors that only last a short stint. Given the feedback from the consumers, sometimes the brand brings the flavors on full time in the future.
Malt is sugar that adds a toasty flavor, and it has the added benefit of preventing iciness in ice cream and creating a smooth, creamy texture. Graeter's is the definition of premium as their bases are bold and dense in flavor. Digging into this base the malt powder added to the ice cream enhances the ingredients providing a luscious and rich tasting vanilla malt. Graeter's already has one of the best vanilla ice creams on the market, and this inclusion just took it to another level.
This is the first time Graeter's has used pretzel balls in their ice cream. The brand has used chocolate covered pretzels in a limited edition Stout & Pretzels flavor (October 2017). The pretzel balls are denser, thicker, and pack more crunch then the chocolate pretzels I experienced in Stout & Pretzels. The salt is just right, and the milk chocolate outer coating is the icing on the cake to make a great unrefined mix-in. Chocolate covered pretzels are one of my favorite mix-ins for ice cream and Graeters nailed it with milk chocolate pretzel balls. I really hope to see more mew mix-ins over this year with seven more bonus flavors yet to come.
Graeter's is off to a good start with the summer bonus flavors. They took two elements of previous bonus flavors and meshed them together with a small twist. The milk chocolate pretzel ball idea was genius especially to those who enjoy thick mix-ins. This first bonus flavor is available from May 13th for three weeks (June 2nd) in all Graeter's Scoop Shops and for online ordering. Act quickly before it is gone
