Ample Hills Breakfast Trash
Ample Hills Breakfast Trash is labeled as "Cap'n Crunch, Frosted Flakes and Corn Pops-infused ice cream mixed with Fruity Pebbles and Froot Loops." This is the 2019 Flavor Frenzy winner that knocked of Sunday Brunch in the very final round. This has been a flavor that has been available in scoops shops before as a limited edition flavor. The demand was so high it was included in this years 16 flavors that fans got to vote on to bring back. A lot of the previous flavors in the past have been absolutely stellar (PB 4 President, Corn to Run), so where does this fall on the Ample Hills lineup?
The base is created by steep the milk in Corn Pops, 85 pounds of Cap’n Crunch and a whopping 120 pounds of Frosted Flakes. Ample Hills wanted to venture away from a plain vanilla base and create the experience of eating cereal is the flavor of cereal-infused milk. The brand did a good job on picking up the sweetness in the aftertaste like you are drinking the milk after a leftover bowl of cereal. The creamy ice cream hits your tastebuds, but the flavor fades quickly without leaving you with that pop you are looking for. The flavor lacked density, which was a bit of a letdown. When trying to put a lot of aspects into one ice cream base there can be attributes that do not pull their weight.
The Fruity Pebble and Froot Loops mix-ins were consistent from top to bottom. Ample Hills bakery team mixes 160 pounds of Froot Loops with 160 pounds of Fruity Pebbles, many cups of unsalted butter and cane sugar. Popping the lid you can see the melody of flavors that lace the surface of the ice cream. As you dig further you notice the mix-ins fade in size to specs. I did experience two full size fruit loop pieces, but besides that it was generally flakes of fruity pebbles. The cereal holds its composure very well, but the sheer amount of lime, lemon, orange and cherry flavors are a mere sugary aftertaste.
Ample Hills Breakfast Trash provides a subtle cereal milk base flavor with plentiful amount of mix-ins from Fruity Pebbles and Fruit Loops. The ratio of cereal is in heavy favor of fruit pebbles as I worked my way down my pint. My biggest gripe was the overall richness from both the ice cream base and cereal inclusion. I really enjoyed the concept, but I was not blown away like a kid on a Saturday morning watching cartoons eating a bowl of cereal.
