Salt & Straw Jeweled Brown butter Rice Gelato
Jeweled Brown butter Rice Gelato is labeled as “Melted brown butter and melted rice gelato then add in two mix-ins verjus soaked currants and ribbons of dark pumpkin seed caramel.” After seeing initial feedback this was one the highest praised flavors of the pack. If you have ever had salt and straw you know they do not skimp on the swirls! This was piqued my interest the most.
This base was phenomenal. From the second I dug my spoon in for my first bite the brown butter taste is dominant, and you taste an aftertaste of rice cereal in the background of your taste buds. I don’t know how Salt & Straw pulled that off, but they are masters when it comes to flavor. The creaminess of the gelato tastes identical to their ice cream. At no point did I think this was a pure gelato flavor due to density it provided. I expected the base to temper and melt faster, but it was actually the firmest of all the pints I got in my pack.
The mix-ins were noticed from the surface of the pint. The currants were everywhere and like landmines throughout the experience. I have never had currants in an ice cream before, but yet again Salt & Straw continues to amaze me. The sweetness found in the currants helps enhance the rich brown butter base to give it a fantastic compliment. If that was not good enough the burnt caramel swirl just took this one over the top. Some people may be turned down by the “burnt” aspect, but in my opinion it provides the tri-fecta to complete this pint. The flavoring was identical to the base in Ample Hills Salted Crack Caramel. The burnt flavoring truly shines and the creaminess and thickness of the swirl is left lingering on your taste buds.
The further I dug in this pint the better it got. That seems to be the moral of the story when you eat Salt & Straw Ice cream. The burnt caramel swirl was perfect, this pint was loaded with luscious currants, and the base was lights out. This is easily my favorite of the pack, and a reason why I decided to get two.
