Salt and Straw Tokyo PB & J:
Tokyo PB&J is labeled as “toasted white rice then steeping with white soy sauce. Studded peanut butter enrobed feuilletine and a ripple of whiskey soaked strawberries.” This one raised a big question mark to me because I have never had something this unique before. Salt & Straw being the best in the business let’s see how this turned out!
Upon opening the pint you get a very large aroma of the soy sauce. To me this was the strongest scented ice cream I ever smelled popping a lid. After I did take my first bite I had to pinch my tongue. This was way too strong for my liking as the soy kills all the other flavors involved in the pint. After a few more bites I had a very hard time enjoying this.
The peanut butter and strawberry are hardly noticed in this pint, but you do find nice little chunks that resemble toffee. While these pieces do provide a great crunchy aspect it was almost impossible to mask the base. I did see small seams of peanut butter and a small fleck of jelly, but besides that this was almost a pure base flavor. Seeing the density of the soy sauce takes over any other aspect in this flavor it is very hard to truly diagnose the mix-ins.
Overall this was my least favorite pint to date from Salt & Straw because I was turned off from the first bite. Due to the overpowering soy sauce in the base it was just way too strong for my liking. That ingredient just disabled all components of the ice cream. I personally would not revisit this flavor, but your mileage may vary.
