Ben & Jerry's Glampfire Trail Mix
Ben & Jerry's Glampfire Trail Mix is labeled as "Chocolate Ice Cream with Crunchy Pretzel Swirls, Marshmallow Swirls & Fudge Covered Almonds". At first glance I had some low hopes because the chocolate base from Ben & Jerry's is not their best. If anyone it could be their worst base they produce. When reading the mix-ins this doesn't give me a s'mores vibe, more along the lines of a rocky road. I have only seen the Pretzel swirls once before, and they were absolutely glorious. Could this target exclusive be a sleeper?
When popping the lid it is always pleasing to see swirls, mix-ins, and a fine looking base. I will start off by saying I have never enjoyed the chocolate base by itself from Ben & Jerry's. To me this is bottom of the barrel, boring, and dull. After a few bites it tasted different, and dare I say better!? This is not as good as their chocolate malt base found in Chocolate Shake-It, but it has an improved sweetness to it. The overall taste reminds of a chocolate pudding you can buy in the grocery store. My eyebrows have already rose to my delight of this tasting better then I expected.
Next up are the mix-ins and as you have read in my previous reviews Ben & Jerry's does not skimp on the marshmallow swirl. As it lingers on the surface it soon propels into massive globs as you work your way down the pint. The overall taste of the marshmallow is pure and dense. What really sets this off is the pretzel swirl in conjunction with the richness of the marshmallow. The added salt and pretzel flavoring amplify the overall taste of the entire pint from top to bottom. The pretzel swirl as seen before in Candy Bar Pie gives this a fantastic salty and sweet combination. While the pretzel swirl is hard to see it is not hard to pick up as you continue to sift through pint. The chocolate covered almonds are big in size, much larger then the usual fudge flakes you see in most Ben & Jerry's pints. The crunchiness enhances the salty pretzel swirl and provides a dark chocolate coating to intensify the chocolate base.
I wrote this off before I even dug in, luckily I gave this a chance. While the name implies a S'mores flavor this is a rocky road in disguise. Do not let the name fool you, or the regular chocolate base turn you away. I highly suggest giving this one a shot because it may be one of the biggest sleepers Ben & Jerry's has ever produced.
