Ben & Jerry's Chillin’ The Roast Truffles
Ben & Jerry's Chillin’ The Roast Truffles is labeled as "Cold brew coffee ice cream with chocolate cookie-covered coffee liqueur truffles and fudge swirls.". Being a major coffee head I had very high hopes for this. I personally enjoy B&J's coffee base, so I am eager to see how strong of a cold brew is included. The truffles have been a major miss so far, but perhaps this experience may change my point of view.
The cold brew coffee ice cream in Chillin’ the Roast Truffles ice cream is strong. If you remember
“Brewed to Matter” this is an upgrade to the original coffee base. The coffee aspect is strong, and the
cold brew reminds me of New Orleans Café Au Lait & Beignets. This is nowhere near as powerful as
Jeni’s original Black Cat Espresso (which has beans infused in the base), but Ben & Jerry’s did a great job
on providing a luscious and dense coffee base. If you are not a coffee lover this may be a little on the
strong side to your liking.
The chocolate cookie coating tastes identical to regular semi-sweet chocolate. The coating reminded me
of the famous fudge flakes they put in 75% of their pints. The coffee liqueur is bold, and by bold I mean
very noticeable. This is easily the strongest booze aspect they have included in their lineup. The brandy
touch is a great combination when paired with coffee, but again this may be too overwhelming as I
raised an eyebrow as a non-drinker. If you remember Salted Caramel Brownie-Ale, or Dublin Mudslide
the effect of the booze is merely noted in the aftertaste. The fudge swirl on the other hand is something
we have seen in Vanilla Caramel Fudge & Chubby Hubby. While the fudge is good, it is not top tier. The
density needs to pack more of a punch to truly stand out. While it does enhance the pint it leaves more
to be desired.
Overall this was a good flavor, and I rank it that because I am a die-hard coffee fan. For those who do
not want a powerful boozy addition, or a rich coffee base this may be one to shy from. I personally
enjoyed it, but would tone down the liqueur and increase the flavoring of the fudge swirl. That would be
appeal more the general consumers
