Ample Hills The Resistance
Ample Hills The Resistance is labeled as "Brown sugar and vanilla bean ice cream with an assortment of mix-ins: fiery red velvet ooey gooey butter cake to represent tenacity, hard-edged toffee pieces to exhibit ferocity, and hopeful marshmallows."
The brown sugar and vanilla bean ice cream mixture is a first from Ample Hills. The brown sugar is seen in Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace & Butter Pecan Brittle. The Vanilla bean has only been used once before in Carolina Jes Pie (Superbowl Flavor). Upon first bite you are engulfed by a very sweet, rich brown sugar ice cream base. As you dig deeper you tend to get an aftertaste of molasses with how strong the homemade brown sugar ice cream truly is. The vanilla bean provides the luscious vanilla Ample Hills is known for, but gives you the bean aftertaste like a vanilla bean coffee creamer. When put together this base is top tier.
The assortment of mix-ins provided in this pint is red velvet ooey gooey butter cake, toffee, and marshmallows. As we know marshmallows can get hard when frozen in ice cream, but the very few I got managed to hold up well and still be soft. The sweetness improves the vanilla bean flavoring to make it stand out even more. The toffee pieces as seen in coffee toffee coffee provide a stellar crunch. the texture of these give you a nice bite because the gooey butter cake virtually melts in your mouth. If you have ever had Ample hills you know their gooey butter cake is a top tier mix-in. The moist, rich, and butter cake has a small red velvet flavor to it that is subtle due to the amount of flavoring provided in the bases and marshmallows. You do taste a small hint of cocoa from the red velvet, but it is masked from the assortment of mix-ins and flavored provided in this pint.
Butter cake and toffee pieces are two signature mix-ins from ample hills. If you ever had Nonna D's (The best oatmeal cookie ice cream on the market) you know how pure the brown sugar flavor is. This flavor is not on the level of Gowanus, but easily the star of the 3 pack of Star Wars flavors released in 2017. The biggest downside was the pint was under 300g in weight. The lack of density put this under 3 servings worth in the pint. Picking it up out of the box it felt like a balloon. Could of been a possible error during production.
