Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie
Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie is labeled as "Pumpkin ice cream with a cinnamon graham cracker swirl." While this is a simple recipe on paper, Turkey Hill is known for massive swirls. I have had this in the past, but never wrote a formal review. Therefore I want to shed people on the best grocery store ice cream you can buy.
Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie ice cream provides a middle of the road pumpkin base. This is no Handel's (my personal favorite), but it is still good for a grocery store offering. The pumpkin flavor is present but not very strong. Since there is no "spice" associated with the base do not expect to get hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, or clove associated with it to help enhance the overall flavor. The buttermilk fat content can not be very high because the base does temper fast, and it is light in texture. Unlike a dense premium ice cream they take a bit to temper and have a much thicker consistency.
Where the ice cream really shines is the graham cracker swirl. As with most Turkey Hill offerings they do not short change you on the swirl. Once you pass the surface its game on. The swirl can be as large as 1" thick and contains a high quality of cinnamon and graham cracker flavor. The thickness of the swirl provides a nice bite to it as you make your way through the ice cream. The crunchiness of the swirl with the sheer amount of flavor really helps thicken the airy ice cream. This is far superior then a Ben & Jerry swirl that you will find in their pumpkin cheesecake which is much smaller in size and density.
Overall if you are looking for a subtle basic pumpkin base that has a phenomenal graham cracker swirl this is right up your alley. Turkey Hill is not known to be dynamic with mix-ins, but they execute well with their lineup. When you can get quarts as cheap as $3 it is a cost effective buy for one of their best selling flavors. A stronger base with a complimenting mix in would really set the standard for one of the best pumpkin ice cream's available in the U.S.
