Graeter's Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip
Graeter's Salted Caramel Chocolate Chip is labeled as "Original Salted Caramel ice cream, still crafted by cooking brown sugar and cream with a pinch of salt, even more decadent with the addition of our gourmet, signature dark chocolate chips". While basic on paper Graeter's is known to deliver fantastic flavors to their signature chocolate chip lineup. Having every flavor on the line I wanted to see where this one stacks among the greats!
The Salted caramel base is good, but I was hoping the caramel would pack more of a punch then what I did get. Right away as you dig into your first bite the flavoring of the caramel is noticed, but it is subtle to me. When you think of caramel you think of rich and luscious with a salty aftertaste. While the saltiness was present I did not get much of the brown sugar as indicated in the description of the product. Increase the density of the caramel, a stronger brown sugar presence, and an extra pinch of salt I think this could of been top tier for a salted caramel base.
As we all know by now if you have ever scooped a Graeter's flavor is they are known for their signature chocolate chips. These dark chocolate chips can be massive in size(upward to an inch in thickness), and explode on your taste buds with flavor. Since Graeter's does utilize the French Pot Process when mixing their ice cream sometimes you can get a ton of mix-ins and sometimes there can be a little bit less then desired. These chocolate chips are soft, melt in your mouth, and have the perfect density to be frozen in ice cream. What I truly enjoy about Graeter's is their consistency. From first bite to last you always get a nice chunk of chocolate chips. Unfortunately I never really got any large pieces throughout this entire pint, but there was still a good portion of chocoalte chips throughout my experience.
Overall I would put this as a middle of the road flavor for Graeter's. This is nothing that will crack my top 5 (Buckeye, Cheesecrown, Black Raspberry, Cookies & Cream being the leading contenders), but still an enjoyable flavor. If you enjoy caramel then you should really give this pint at least a shot. Personally in my eyes the base flavoring needs to be stronger, extra salt needs to be added, and the caramel has to have an extra kick of sweetness to really stand out.
