Ample Hill's The Commodore
Ample Hill's The Commodore is labeled as "salt honey base with clusters of chocolate covered potato chips and house made honeycomb candy.
" The base may sound familiar to Sweet as Honey "sweet cream ice cream with pieces of homemade honeycomb candy". The major difference here is the salt honey base and added chocolate covered potato chips. After having this in 2016 it quickly rose to one of my all-time favorites from AH.
The salted honey base is phenominal from first bite to last. What I really enjoy in the salt honey base is the amount of salt added. This helps enhance the flavor of the sweet honey, which is like picking fresh nectar from a bee hive. The flavor is so pure and sweet it is exactly what you would expect from Ample Hills. The ice cream itself is very creamy and tempers on the fast side. After 5 minutes it is pretty soft and very easy to scoop. You can take this right out of the freezer and put a nice dent in it.
From the first bite Ample Hills is known for consistency. The first bite entailed a massive chocolate chip covered potato chip that was almost the size of a Graeter's Chocolate Chip. At some points I was eating just pure chocolate covered potato chips and honey comb candy. The beauty of the mix-ins is they pack flavor, and the potato chips did not get soggy. Each potato chip has the crunchiness you would expect and a melt in your mouth milk chocolate coating. As you dig deep into the pint the candy almost gives a caramel glaze/swirl vibe which really sets this pint apart from the regular OG lineup.
There is a reason why this is a Vanderbilt exclusive flavor and has been a top seller on the Ample Hills line. Sweet, salty, and savory you name it this pint delivers it. If you are a fan of honey comb cereal, sweet nectar honey, or chocolate potato chips don't think twice. Easily a pint I could rescoop and never get sick of. This is my #2 favorite off the Ample Hills line, and every year I have to order the Taste of NY to have it.
