Handel's Twixter
Handel's Twixter is labeled as "Vanilla ice cream with caramel ripple, chocolate chips, and sugar cookie pieces." Luckily I got to sample this before I left the Handel's. After sampling it I demanded a pint to take home with me. The co-worker claimed this was his favorite flavor off the lineup, and after trying it I saw why. This one is hard to find, but if you can grab it I highly suggest it and here is why.
The vanilla ice cream used in Handel's bases is made in house from scratch. The quality of it is very close to Graeter's, but not as dense. The vanilla flavor shines but the best aspect is the sweet and luscious aftertaste it does provide. The ice cream resembles a 50/50 mix between soft serve and dense premium ice cream in texture. After letting the pint temper for 5 minutes you are basically cutting butter with how smooth and creamy it is. This is a very good vanilla ice cream that is overlooked on the ice cream market.
The caramel ripple soon became caramel pools. Pools may be nice as the globs of caramel really amplified the second I got 1/4th of the way through the pint. After the first spoonfuls it reminds you of eating Little G Ice Cream swirls that are dense, loaded, and packed with sweet and sugary flavor. The swirl was the highlight of the pint as the chocolate chip pieces and sugar cookie pieces were icing on the cake. The chocolate chip pieces are smaller versions of Ben & Jerry's fudge flakes. While they are nothing to rave over, they pack a nice milk chocolate flavor to enhance the caramel swirl and vanilla base. The sugar cookie pieces were hard to find which kind of let me down. Upon scooping them they are very soft, dense, and chewy in flavor. The extra sweetness from the sugar cookie helps improve the base to make this even better.
I have been trying to track down this flavor for over 1.5 years and finally got lucky at a different Handel's location in Pittsburgh. After sampling this I had to get a pint, and I am glad I did. The vanilla base and caramel swirl are everything you would want in an ice cream. The chocolate pieces were everywhere, but the sugar cookie pieces were lacking. With a higher ratio of sugar cookie pieces in this pint it would be a homerun, but overall this is a flavor you must try if you head to Handel's.
