Ample Hills The Land of Milk & Honey
Ample Hills The Land of Milk & Honey is labeled as "A salty honey ice cream with pieces of cinnamon bun ButterCrunch matzo from our friends at The Matzo Project." There was a lot of rave in 2016 when this was released and I happened to miss picking it up. When it came out again after the Flavor Frenzy in 2017 I decided to grab a few pints to see how good this one was!
The base is a salty honey ice cream which is very similar to Sweet as Honey and the Commodore. What I really enjoy is the amount of salt added to this flavor. The honey flavor is enhanced to the perfect degree which is like picking fresh nectar from a bee hive. The flavor is so pure and sweet it is exactly what you would expect from Ample Hills. For those who do not have a massive sweet tooth it could be pretty stronger to their liking.
I have never had matzo before in my life. This was a new adventure, but it was not a bad one. At first I had to google matzo to find it was a jewish flatbread. With the added cinnamon bun butter crunch this reminded me of eating cinnamon toast crunch infused into ice cream. The matzo pieces are not big by any means, but there are lots of them from the first bite to the last as expected from Ample Hills. Considering cinnamon toast crunch is one of my favorite cereals the added crunch and flavor gave the base a nice compliment. Enhancing the salty honey base with a sweet mix-in was really a great choice as this flavor popped your taste buds.
The salty honey ice cream is one of my favorite bases offered by ample hills. The only problem was one mix-in was not enough to make this a top tier flavor. While I enjoyed the uniqueness of the matzo inclusion the sweet and salty combination was on point. With an added salted caramel swirl, or the amount of honey found in "Sweet As Honey" this could be a much improved pint. Overall worth a try, and something I would re-visit in the future
