Little G's Carrot Cake
Little G's Carrot Cake is labeled as "Cream cheese ice cream with carrot cake pieces and candied walnuts". Another flavor in the spring lineup that has a carrot cake base. I am interested to see how strong the cheesecake flavor is just on its own. Let us not forget how pure the carrot cake pieces are being homemade by Grace in house.
First bite and the cream cheese base was good. The base provides a bold cream cheese flavor. Complimenting the flavor is the creaminess and density packed into little G ice cream. When I think of cream cheese I think about a tangy aftertaste associated with eating cream cheese, or when using it in recipes. What I found as the more I scooped this pint is the elements of a carrot cake. Each bite entails spices found in the carrot cake which help give it a true carrot cake flavor. Essentially the spices soon overpower the creaminess and flavor of the cream cheese base as everything comes together.
The carrot cake pieces in this pint were the star, but there were far more candied walnuts. The candied walnuts were massive in size, and surpassed the size of the candied pecans in several of her past flavors. The amount of candied aftertaste in them was not as strong as her pecans. The sugary and sweet flavoring was subtle to my liking. Maple French Toast and Sweet Potato Casserole had a stronger candied aspect to the mix-ins. The cake pieces were moist, chunked up into finer shreds, and had a strong nutmeg aftertaste. The added hints of clove and cinnamon really rounded this flavor to make the carrot cake delicious.
Besides the carrot cake "pieces" being extremely small, the density and size of the walnuts were huge. The dense spices of carrot cake are present in each and every bite. The spices are strong to the point where it blends into the cream cheese base and rids of any tanginess you may find. Fix the ratio of carrot cake and walnuts in this pint would be my first step. Second would be improve the candied aspect of the walnuts there was not enough sweet and sugary flavor to them at all. Lastly is make the size of the walnuts smaller. I found them so large they overpowered the carrot cake which was the highlight of this pint.
