Salt & Straw Cocanu’s Coffee & Craque
Salt & Straw Cocanu’s Coffee & Craque is labeled as "For this flavor, we worked with Sebastian to tell a story using single origin chocolates and coffee beans in a coffee, caramel ribbons, and chocolate ice cream with candied cocoa nibs" What I find interesting is they took a combination of coffee, and combined it with caramel ribbons and candied cocoa nibs. When you pop the lid you see no signs of caramel swirls or cocoa nibs, but we know Salt and Straw brings good consistency with their mix-ins as you get into the pint. Being a HUGE coffee fan I want to see wher this stacks up among the other coffee flavors on the market. With how much quality Salt & Straw packs into their ice cream I have a feeling this one will be a keeper.
Upon scooping my first bite this coffee ice cream is fantastic. Not only is the coffee flavor very rich, it provides a perfect balance of a light/blonde roast infused into ice cream. For myself I enjoy those lighter coffee flavors more then dark roasts. Imagine eating New Orleans Cafe Au Lait, but with an enhanced flavor which was one of my favorite coffee bases. I found this base to be pretty similar to Jeni's Black Cat Espresso, but just not as dark. Overall the base alone is phenomenal, and just off that alone I would purchase any coffee ice cream offered by Salt & Straw due to how much flavor I experienced. Again Salt and Straw's quality of ice cream is a big reason you get what you pay for.
The cocoa nibs that are supposed to be candied were not really exactly as explained. While the cocoa nibs did taste great, they did provide dark chocolate flavor, a great crunch, and a melt in your mouth texture. As I continued to climb down the pint they started to appear in clusters. Usually you will get shards here and there in every bite, but it got to the point were some chunks were similar to Graeter's chocolate chunks. Not that I am going to complain, but the biggest downfall was the candied flavor was non existent. I was expecting more cinnamon sugar based cocoa nibs, or an enhanced cocoa nib flavor, but that never crossed my pint.
Overall the base alone was worth the scoop. The added cocoa nibs had fantastic chocolate flavor that melted in my mouth, but did not pack the candied aspect I was looking for. Would i repurchase this pint? Probably not, but I would like to see Salt and Straw make more Coffee based flavors. With the misleading description on the mix-in it kind of turned me off. Do not get me wrong the texture, crunchiness, and flavor was spot on for the mix-ins. Overall a good pint, not one of the top tier flavors from Salt & Straw, but worth a crack if you love coffee.
