Ample Hills PB Wins the Cup
Ample Hills PB Wins the Cup is labeled as "Sweet Cream Base with Peanut Butter Chocolate flakes and House-made Peanut Butter Cups". One thing I really liked about this pint is AH decided to go with a sweet cream base. While Sweet Cream is usually seen in milk and cookie, cookie and cream based flavors this could pair very well with chocolate and peanut butter. Hopefully the sweet cream base helps enhance the overall combination of chocolate and peanut butter provided by the mix-ins. Ample Hills is very well known for incredible mix-ins and high quality ice cream, after reading this description I have very high hopes!
The sweet cream base was similar to one of my favorite pints Sweet as Honey. The amount of sweetness and cream blend together very well as it has a very high butterfat content to enhance the flavor. Its not a true oreo cream center like you would picture a sweet cream to be, but think about a bold vanilla with a cream aftertaste. I really enjoy the sweet cream over the basic vanilla Ample Hills offers. While the vanilla is a top tier flavor off their line and better then most basic brands in supermarkets this one is a step above. We are already off to a great start. The only downside to Sweet as Honey is it tends to melt fast and it is not as thick as some of the other flavors. The density of the ice cream is thin, but in this flavor it held up to be much thicker.
First off the peanut butter chocolate flakes do not pack a lot of peanut butter as the name implies. Think about taking a broken chocolate bar and mixing it into the sweet cream base. Each bite melts in your mouth but the name is a touch misleading to what you would expect. I was hoping to get a small peanut butter aftertaste, but that was not the case. The texture of them is what really helps enhance the peanut butter cups added. Not only do you get a crunchy compliment you get halved peanut butter cups that have a buckeye cream center to them. The peanut butter has a sweetness enhanced flavor to it, that is look spooning it straight out of a jar. With the small enhancement of salt think about a Smuckers peanut butter laced with a hint of sugar. Absolutely delicious.
My expectations were high, and they were not let down. A premium base, incredible mix-ins, and a peanut butter lovers dream come true. Between this and PB For President its hard to decide what I like better, but I would probably give the edge to PB 4 President due to the cake pieces offered. The cups were fantastic and reminded me of Ben & Jerry's PB Cup with how big they were from top to bottom. The chocolate flakes were basically a broken chocolate bar that helped add texture and crunch to this offering. Solid around the board and a good grade from me.
