Gelato Fiasco Truffles in River City
Gelato Fiasco Truffles in River City is labeled as "A Cherry Gelato that is filled with dark chocolate truffles and bits of chocolate chunks." In the MGMT 6 Pack Gelato Fiasco did not provide full explanations of the flavors. Judging by my experience with the pint and what I gathered from other reviews this was pretty accurate for a description. It has been some time since I had visited a GF Pint, but I know that the PB, Mascarpone, Almond butter chocolate chip, espresso chip, and S'mores were all good pints. Lets see how this one will fair.
Upon popping the lid there are huge visible chunks of chocolate truffles. That is always an added bonus. The gelato base is exactly as you would expect. Super creamy in texture, and has a very nice and tart cherry flavor to it. This reminded me of Graeter's Black Cherry Chocolate Chip with how well the flavors meshed together. I personally am not the biggest fruity ice cream or gelato fan, but this was incredibly enjoyable. For a good change of pace Gelato Fiasco really hit this flavor well.
The mix-ins were really hit or miss throughout the experience. Judging by what I saw on first glance was more then what I really was expecting. After a few spoonfuls I dug into my first truffle. The truffle was a milk chocolate coating that provided a cake like texture on the inside. In other words delicious, and not rock hard like you would expect especially being frozen as a gelato. There are very scarce amounts of chocolate chunks (based per the description) but the few truffles I did encounter made up for them. The chocolate chunks were a reminiscent of eating a Hershey chocolate bar chunked up throughout the pint. The milk chocolate and black cherry like base did make for a good compliment and delightful choice of mix-ins.
For my first MGMT Pint I was happy. Was I blown away? Absolutely not, nor would I rank this a top 5 flavor off the line. For someone who is not a huge fruit fan I have to say this was a great flavor added for variety. The base was done very well, the creminess of the gelato was on point, but the mix-ins could of used work as far as being consistent. Gelato Fiasco is known for hit or miss pints with mix-ins. Sometimes you may get a ton, and for some you get nothing. My Wild Blueberry Maine virtually was a base with nothing added. Since the MGMT pack is heavy in babka, donuts, and other specialty desserts I am eager to see how these all rank. For a first experience good, but nothing that I would rush to rescoop.
