Chocolate Shoppe Mackinac Island Fudge Ice Cream
Mackinac Island Fudge Ice Cream is labeled as "Scrumptious vanilla ice cream with a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fudge ripple and chunks of real chocolate fudge." While on paper that sounds simple, lets see if Chocolate Shoppe can live up to its quality as a great ice cream company and make this pint stand out.
A little history about Mackinac Island Fudge that may be noteworthy to this review. Jerome Murdick, originated fudge on Mackinac Island in Michigan starting back to the late 1800's and early 1900's. Jerome continued the family fudge-making tradition using the original recipe. Each summer, Jerome and his wife, Grace, ran the Main Street business (the couple lived in the back of their shop). When I lifted the lid it looked very basic with the dominant vanilla base and small little ripples of fudge present. After seeing that trend on the PB Cup and Ultimate Oreo I had in the past, I figured it was a matter of a few bites before I would strike gold with mix-ins. After a few bites the base was nothing out of the ordinary. The Scrumptious vanilla ice cream tasted very generic and had nothing that made it stand out. I would rank it a touch above Ben & Jerry's, which does utilize the vanilla base in a lot of ice cream offerings. It had a bold initial flavor, but after that you got no real lingering aftertaste or luscious flavoring.
Now that we understand the quality behind Mackinac Island Fudge that is a major reason why the mix-ins on this pint make it surreal. The fudge is fantastic, and possibly the best fudge mix-in I have ever had. The chunks provide a dark chocolate flavor that are soft, chewey, and have a melt in your mouth taste. The Fudge swirl is just as good as the density, flavor, and richness of the fudge is leaps and bounds better than anything you may have ever laid your hands on. As the pint gets deeper you can see the swirl enhance and the fudge pieces become in abundance.
Overall the description and pint seems incredible simple on paper, but is executed to perfection. Besides a very basic vanilla base the fudge swirl and fudge mix-ins raise the bar to a new level. The incredible tasting mix-ins and thick swirl make you digging deeper for another bite after putting your last one down. Easily the best fudge mix-in and best fudge swirl I have ever laid my hands on. The quality of using the Mackinac Fudge set this pint worlds above 2nd Street truck stop fudge, Ben & Jerry's Fudge Brownie, and Talenti Fudge Brownie. If you are a fudge fan you need this in your life immediately.
