New Orleans Ice Cream Co. Cajun Rum Raisin
New Orleans Cajun Rum Raisin is labeled as " Plump Raisins Soaked in Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum & A Unique Cayenne Kick Make this unique flavor a creamy, spicy Delight!" Upon reading that description a few things popped into my head relating to Steve's Mexican Chili Chocolate and Jeni's Queen City Cayenne. I have had some heat in pints before, but mixing it with spice sounds very interesting to say the least!
Upon popping the top you are presented with a fine looking vanilla type base. While the spice really has no description for color I was intrigued on how much richness the spice, rum, and cayenne kick would compliment each other. Upon first bite I was very shocked for a low calorie ice cream on the amount of boldness in the flavor. The Spice Rum is similar to the bourbon experience i had in Jeni's Rumball. The rum overwhelming but provides a strong initial taste and long lasting aftertaste. The amount of cayenne is minimal, but it is present in each bite you do take which provides a nice compliment.
Lets talk about the raisins mixed into this pint. Ever get a pint that is loaded with mix-ins and you wonder if they are ever going to stop? Well that just happened. I scooped at least two dozen raisins throughout this pint as i made my way to the very last bite. Each raisin is very soft in texture, like you are eating them out of a box. New Orleans Ice Cream did a great job on including these, and providing them in a very large amount for those who enjoy mix-ins.
Overall I had skeptical hopes as I do with most low caloric based ice creams. This pint is 140 calories per serving. The only other time I was blown away by a low calorie ice cream was Gelato Fiasco's Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel, but needless to say this lived up to its name and was fantastic. A solid base that has a strong flavor, plenty of mix-ins, and a nice hint of cayenne. While the uniqueness of this pint may have won me over, this may be hit or miss for other individuals. I would re-scoop this in a heartbeat.
