Talenti Coffee Toffee Gelato
Talenti has released some new flavors, and with that said it is time to find them and scoop them! After hearing about Coffee Toffee, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Tiramisu, Salted Peanut, oatmeal Raisin, and Chocolate Hazelnut I had to go about and find these right away. Luckily I was in columbus at the time and being in the ice cream capital of the US I had some luck and found 4 of the 6 flavors that were released. I wasted no time being a coffee lover to dig right into this one.
Coffee Toffee is labeled as " coffee gelato with pieces of soft almond toffee covered in chocolaty goodness". Being a coffee lover I think I was spoiled when I got to try Jeni's Black Cat Espresso. Talenti's base uses a very mild coffee flavor that does not have a long lasting or flavorful aftertaste. The gelato is a very fine ice cream that is soft, luscious, and bold in flavor, but it does not match Ben & Jerry's or Jeni's when it comes to coffee flavoring.
After digging into the pint I was soon to reveal the toffee pieces that were similar to the caramel pieces found in "Sea Salt Caramel". These toffee pieces were covered in chocolate and loaded with caramel in each and every bite. Coming to the point of making a caramel swirl they are so packed and dense in flavor. I was actually shocked how well these were in resemblance to SSC (Sea Salt Caramel) they just offered a harder texture and difference in taste that was unique to the coffee base.
Overall this is a good flavor, but not great. The Coffee base needs work, it is not strong enough or flavorful enough to top some of the better coffee bases out there especially Jeni's which uses pure Intelligentsia Coffee beans. When tasting this base you get a very mild brewed coffee flavor that lacks after taste or density. I would compare this to an instant coffee flavoring you can buy in the grocery store. The key part of this pint was the toffee pieces and the amount of chocolate/caramel mixture they comprised. While the amount of mix-ins are not anywhere like the minefield found in SSC, they are still a good amount which gives this pint a good compliment and saves it from a bad score. overall not the best, but still a decent offering from Talenti.
