Jeni's Brown Butter Almond Brittle
Jeni's Brown Butter Almond Brittle is labeled as " Rich browned butter ice cream and salty, crunchy almonds. Familiar and delicious." The first couple times I have had this at a Jeni's shop I was blown away not only at the amazing ice cream, but also the amount of crunchy almonds they are thrown into the mix. I have never had a full pint experience just a little scoop at the shop and sample here or there, but with a full pint I found it to be just that much better of an experience.
Jeni's has also included that the Brown Butter comes ""Based on the traditional Norwegian dessert krokan. Browned butter gives depth to salty, sweet almond brittle." And with some more information "Krokan are caramelized sugar mixed with butter and almonds. Krokan used including hook anise, almond, where the pieces are small, brown spots, or filling and flavoring in sweets or cakes. The word comes from the almond croquant, which means "crunchy" in French."
The initial taste is very pleasing, you get a nice buttery rush that had minor amounts of sweetness. You would think being more brown butter this would be packed with flavor as it is, but this is not something that a sugar lover may enjoy because of the denser brown butter flavor it offers. The bold flavoring really shines as you continue through the pint and grows on you.
Jeni's did a fantastic job not only with the brown butter base which is very rich, bold, and full of flavor. The key thing with this is even with minor mix-ins which Jeni's does from time to time. The amount of almond brittle or crunchy almonds you encounter can be massive or on the smaller side but add a fantastic compliment to the pint. You even get hints of a small syrup that is around the almonds in the pint that has a very nice a sweet crunchy flavor added to the mix. The almonds continue to amplify as you work down towards the bottom of the pint to almost full size pieces. Overall jeni's did a good job finding great compliments in a unique Brown butter base. This is another reason why it is one of my favorite scoops when I visit a scoop shop!
