Jeni's Buttercup Pumpkin With Amaretti Cookies
When it comes to jeni's they do not slack when it comes to delicious flavors and incredible base ice cream. The only drawback for most when they encounter a Jeni's is the price tag on the pints they do offer. From whole foods and around 7-8$ minimum up to around 11$ per pint which can be at fresh market, and their own shops in Columbus this can be an expensive buy. But if you have never tried a Jeni's before you will soon find out why the common phrase "You Get What You Pay For" means.
Jeni's Buttercup Pumpkin With Amaretti Cookies is labeled as "The sweetest squash, roasted for caramelization and pulverized into cream. A smattering of in-house amaretti cookies adds a note of amaretto". After reading that and reading the description on the pint I was a bit confused because there is no mention of Pumpkin yet after sampling this in a scoop shop I had to raise my eyebrow.
Upon Lifting the lid you see a very fine and looking orange base with maybe a bit of a yellowish kind of tone to it (perhaps from the sweet squash from the description) and there is no hints of any kind of amaretti cookies into the mix. What really interested me is how this italian cookie will blend with a pumpkin ice cream as a macaroon and give it a good compliment in the base and how the pumpkin would correlate if it has a strong nutmeg or cinnamon taste to it.
After my first bite I first thought to myself man this is better than having a true pumpkin pie for a thanksgiving dinner. I had to dig right into my second and third bite to see if I was mistaken for how good this really was, but I was not. The base is superb, you do not taste much squash in reality you taste a legit pumpkin pie. Take Libby's Pumpkin filling and then enhance the flavor to a true and sweet blissful pumpkin flavor that leaves your mouth watering for me. Right off the bat the base touched upon how good Handel's was from the past experiences I have had with pumpkin, and left Graeters and Turkey Hill in the dumps.
As I dug down the pint the dense and flavorful pumpkin base was superb from first bite to last. This is a perfect replica of a pumpkin pie in ice cream form. Not to mention once you reveal the top base you start to see the macaroon Amaretti Cookies which add an incredible crunch and texture to the pint. Without a doubt a unique compliment that goes very well with the fantastic pumpkin pie tasting base from Jeni's. They really hit a home run, and I have to say this is my #1 Pumpkin behind Handels. Handels is very dense like Jeni's, but has a great cinnamon, nutmeg flavoring to the base. Coldstone coming in at #3 which is similar to handels but not as dense of a base. Turkey Hill at #4 with an incredible base but weaker base, then towards the bottom as far as Pumpkin Goes is Ben & Jerry's and Graeters which was downright awful.
